How the math works
No black box: the estimator computes your home's ground footprint (square footage divided by stories), converts it to an approximate perimeter — about 4.1 times the square root of the footprint, assuming a rectangular shape — then adjusts it three ways. Roofline character multiplies by 1.0 to 1.35, because gables and dormers add lit edges that a flat perimeter doesn't capture. Coverage takes the share of the house you're lighting: roughly 45% for a front elevation, 75% adding the sides, 100% all the way around. Two-story homes get a further 15% because upper and lower rooflines are often both lit. The result carries a ±15% band, since two houses with identical specs can measure differently at the eaves.

What the estimator can't know
Steep pitches and third-story ridgelines that change access, stone or stucco that changes attachment, long runs to the nearest outlet, and how your particular elevation meets the street — the details that move a real quote inside (or occasionally outside) the estimate band. Tree wraps use mini-light strands, not C9 roofline bulbs, and the footage adds up faster than intuition suggests: retailer wrap calculators figure it as trunk height × wraps per foot × circumference, which puts a typical trunk around 60 feet of strand — and wrapping the trunk plus the lower branch structure of a mature oak can take 100–200 feet. That's why professional tree wraps are quoted per tree rather than folded into roofline footage, and why the estimator reports them separately.
